D-mannose during pregnancy and breastfeeding is a natural remedy used by many women to combat cystitis. As there are no studies on the use of D-mannose in pregnancy, it is difficult (if not impossible) for anyone to take responsibility for guaranteeing the safety of this sugar during pregnancy. According to information reported on official American and British websites, there are no contraindications to taking D-mannose during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Ultimately, what is the alternative? The antibiotic.
Can a simple sugar, which is not even metabolised, cause more problems than an antibiotic? Both I and the international literature truly believe it does not.

Further insight: Are antibiotics always necessary?

The advice is to take pure D-mannose to avoid ingesting other components that have not yet been tested in pregnancy.

I (Rosanna Piancone) took pure D-mannose throughout my pregnancy with the approval of the doctors I was working with at the time, and during breastfeeding with the approval of my little Morgana’s paediatrician.

In the third month of pregnancy, despite taking D-mannose (just one teaspoon in the evening), I had a very severe cystitis, which was only eradicated with a large amount of D-mannose (always at doses far higher than the usual sufficient ones). That was my last cystitis (21 January 2006).

Morgana was born full-term and perfectly healthy; I breastfed her for 18 months (continuing to take mannose until she was 12 months old) and now she is a wonderful 15-year-old girl.

In my story, you can find my entire journey from the very first onset to the complete recovery from cystitis.
